What we do
Bridging the Gap is a sanctuary-led, community-based organisation challenging structural barriers to higher education for sanctuary seekers.
Through two programmes, Ready Access and Reconnecting with Academic Research (RWAR), we provide a clear pathway from undergraduate entry to postgraduate research and career progression.
Our model combines accurate information, structured skills development, and relational mentoring, delivered through programmes, drop-in support, and a developing One-Stop Education Hub. We support learners at key transition points, from applications and enrolment to research engagement and professional advancement.
Our evidence shows that with clear guidance and sustained support, sanctuary seekers progress with confidence comparable to other widening-participation learners.
Alongside individual outcomes, we contribute to system-level change through policy engagement, institutional partnerships, and sector roundtables across Wales.
Who do we support
Reconnecting with Academic Research (Postgrad)
A structured program for sanctuary seekers with previous postgraduate experience (master’s or PhD). Whether your research is paused, feel disconnected from academia, or want to explore PhD opportunities, this program helps you:
Rebuild academic confidence
Develop research and writing skills
Understand PhD pathways and UK academic culture
Present your research and get tailored mentoring
Connect with supervisors and peer researchers
Ready Access (Undergrad)
Tailored support for sanctuary seekers who want to begin, resume undergraduate or masters journey. This stream supports people with a wide range of qualifications including those with disrupted education or foreign certificates and helps you:
Understand UK university options and entry routes
Navigate UCAS and scholarship
Access foundation year or Access to HE courses
Connect with education advisors and support services
Build confidence to thrive in a university environment
